This could include operational experiences, data quality concerns, assimilation developments, observation operator issues, future missions, or any other topic relevant to the use of RO observations in NWP. So far, we have this tentative list of topics: * Is there a case to be made for NWP benefiting from more than 20k occultations per day? * What evidence do we have for the additional benefit from an even coverage of data in latitude and local time? Indeed, regional RO studies haven’t been a focused topic partially because we didn’t have enough data for studies. But with more data kicks in from private section, this could be a good topic. My opinion. There is no official remote access so far. But it does make me feel if the subgroup lead would like to have remote participants, we probably can just try to use someone’s laptop with wifi. This is an old facility so I don’t know how well it could be though. OFFICIAL Hi Fiona, If I remember correctly, last time we were in Leibnitz the NWP discussion was conducted in the main auditorium. That’s probably tricky to have remote participation, but I’m sure we can find a way if you’re keen. The main aim of the subgroup is to provide recommendations for CGMS. So, is there a regional-specific recommendation that we could discuss (i.e. continue increasing observation density so that regional models also have sufficient observations)? We perhaps could reserve a little time for discussions of best practice in regional NWP. However, an extended discussion feels like a topic for the coffee breaks… 😐 Cheers, Neill OFFICIAL From: Shao, Hui CTR (USA) via Announcements <announcements@lists.irowg.org> Sent: 11 August 2026 14:07 To: Fiona Smith <fiona.smith@bom.gov.au>; Neill Bowler via Announcements <announcements@lists.irowg.org> Cc: Birtukan Biadglgne <birtukan.biadglgne@bom.gov.au>; Shao, Hui CTR (USA) <hui.shao.ctr@us.navy.mil> Subject: [IROWG Announcements] Re: Discussion topics for NWP-subgroup Indeed, regional RO studies haven’t been a focused topic partially because we didn’t have enough data for studies. Dear IROWG community,
We are currently preparing the agenda for upcoming discussions of the IROWG NWP Working Group and would appreciate your input.
Are there any issues, challenges, scientific questions, or emerging topics that you would like the group to discuss? This could include operational experiences, data quality concerns, assimilation developments, observation operator issues, future missions, or any other topic relevant to the use of RO observations in NWP.
So far, we have this tentative list of topics:
* Is there a case to be made for NWP benefiting from more than 20k occultations per day? * What evidence do we have for the additional benefit from an even coverage of data in latitude and local time? (Thanks Rick for sharing Nikki’s paper) * With the transition to US data to NOAA-STAR, what does the community need in order to ensure that the transition is successful?
Please send us your suggestions by replying to this email. We welcome contributions from all members of the IROWG community.

Hi Neill, cc Hui
If there's time, could we add a discussion on experiences using RO in small domain/convection-permitting models?
Note that we aren't able to participate in person this year, but Hui said she enable us to participate remotely if at all possible - I don't know if that would extend to your working groups though.
Thanks, Fiona

We look forward to hearing your ideas.

We look forward to hearing your ideas.

Katrin and all, I hope you all have a good time there. I can join the discussion if it is after 6:00 am my time (EST). Any meeting before 6:00 am EST will be too much for me (sorry). If I cannot join the meeting, I think it may be worth discussing - *1) LSW-based observation errors for individual RO profiles* How can local spectral width (LSW) support a *profile-specific, vertically varying observation-error assignment* instead of a fixed error model? Discuss calibration across missions, treatment of vertical error correlations and representativeness errors, and experiments to determine whether these assignments improve assimilation and forecasts. - - *2) Lessons from ROMEX for global and regional NWP* What do ROMEX experiments establish about the benefits of additional RO observations, including their number, geographic distribution, quality, and assimilation frequency? Distinguish *demonstrated global NWP impacts* from conclusions that require dedicated regional experiments, particularly regarding lateral boundary conditions, assimilation windows, and regional observation coverage. - - Best, Ben *==============================================* *Shu-peng Ben Ho, Ph. Hi Fiona,
If I remember correctly, last time we were in Leibnitz the NWP discussion was conducted in the main auditorium.
However, an extended discussion feels like a topic for the coffee breaks… 😐
Cheers,
Neill
