Ionospheric monitoring and Space Weather with RO: a session on the forthcoming URSI Conference

Dear all. This email is to advertise you about a session planned for the next URSI Asia-Pacific Radio Science Conference (AP-RASC 2025<https://ap-rasc.com/home.php>, Sydney, Australia, 17-22 August 2025) about the exploitation of RO data for Ionospheric Monitoring and Space Weather. The session (see here below a brief description) is organized within the URSI Commission G (Ionospheric Radio and Propagation)<https://ursi.org/files/G/TOR.htm> activities. Session G01: GNSS Radio Occultation and zenith data from Low Earth Orbit: advancements on measurements, data assimilation and models Description: Nowadays several CGMS (Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites) coordinated and commercial Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites host Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers. Topside and radio occultation measurements are becoming fundamental to map the 4D distribution of the free electrons in the Earth atmosphere. The assimilation of such GNSS dual frequency measurements into numerical models has in fact the potential to contribute significantly to the improvement of the ionosphere and plasmasphere monitoring, forecasting and modelling, with important benefits for a better understanding of the space weather. Moreover, techniques for measuring and mapping turbulence strength from small-scale irregularities are also emerging. In this session the contributions on new techniques to estimate the electron density and electron content distribution and irregularities from GNSS LEO topside and radio occultation data, their ingestion into data assimilation models and corresponding applications (e.g. detection of Space Weather, earthquake and tsunami signatures, support to precise navigation), are welcome. Refined schedule for the Sentinel-6A RO instrument update and BUFR outages on GTS

Dear NWP centers: To update our previous email regarding the instrument software update to Sentinel-6 A (Michael Freilich), the upload will begin around 08:30 UTC on January 30, 2025 and end around 11:30 UTC on February 5, 2025. Note that the end may be extended if needed. While we are anticipating very brief outages once per day of up to 30 minutes, please be advised that there could be longer outages if, e.g., quality issues manifest. After the software upload is completed, the Sentinel-6 A BUFR products will not be distributed on GTS for 7-10 days. After this brief checkout period to confirm there is no impact to product performance, the GPS and GLONASS BUFR products will be back online while the performance of the Galileo products continues to be assessed. A separate announcement will follow when the GPS and GLONASS BUFR products are back online and another when the Galileo BUFR products become available on GTS. Upcoming Sentinel-6A RO instrument update

Dear NWP centers: We would like to inform you that a major software update to Sentinel-6 A (aka S6MF) is being planned to occur no earlier than January 27, 2025 to enable the tracking of Galileo radio occultation. During the upload period (which is expected to last several days) there could be instrument outages impacting the number of BUFR products distributed on the GTS. We expect little or no impact on GPS and GLONASS RO from this update. Therefore, we plan to begin releasing these data operationally to the GTS after a 7-10 day checkout period following the upload has completed. Another announcement will follow when the GPS and GLONASS BUFR products are being distributed operationally on GTS. The Galileo RO data will be processed and be made available offline separately for a more extensive evaluation by NWP centers before their operational release. Dear IROWG/ROMEX community, This is a friendly reminder that registration opens now for the second IROWG ROMEX (ROMEX-2) Workshop, which will take place from February 25 to 27, 2025, at EUMETSAT Headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. All ROMEX participants are strongly encouraged to present results, no matter what stages they are at this point. *Please register at the IROWG ROMEX workshop webpage*: https://www.eventsforce.net/eumetsat/frontend/reg/thome.csp?pageID=26230&ev… *Registration Deadline:* January 20, 2025 This Second ROMEX workshop aims to finalize and consolidate the findings from various NWP centers and research entities, align the presentation of these results, and prepare recommendations for CGMS agencies. The workshop will focus on presentations and discussions in the following areas: - Reports on ROMEX related NWP impact studies and applications - Best ways to present ROMEX results to stakeholders and decision-makers - Status and plans of relevant RO missions - Other relevant developments and research pertaining to ROMEX The first two days of the meeting will feature presentations and discussions, while the final day will include a plenary session dedicated to consolidating ROMEX findings and finalizing the report and recommendations for CGMS. In-person participation is strongly encouraged, though remote access will be available. A detailed agenda will be provided after registration closes. *Note:* A full abstract is not required. Following the approach of the first ROMEX workshop, proposals will be accepted as long as the topics are relevant. Please plan your travel in advance, as the agenda will be finalized in early February. Potential removal of 1D-Var products from BUFR

OFFICIAL Hi all, In looking further at the new BUFR sequence, we have been asked the question whether the 1D-Var products (temperature, pressure and specific humidity) and the surface quantities (surface pressure, geopotential height of surface) are required. These are referred to as Level2b and Level2c products in the ROM SAF BUFR description: https://rom-saf.eumetsat.int/romsaf_bufr.pdf We are thinking that NWP centres don't use these products, and therefore they can be removed from the BUFR format (they may still be available from data providers in other formats). If you use these products from BUFR files, then please let us know as soon as possible. If we don't here that they are used, then we will remove them from the new, revised format specification.
